Chaptr 11 and 12
These chapters really made you think that someone who means so much to you as Kat to Paul or an entire class of students can really mean so little as a whole of war. That thousands of people die and everyone having a family that will mourn them. We actually see how Paul reacts to the death of someone close to him rather than random soldiers. We see what's its like to see a friend die right next to you. We see the worst part of being a soldier as your friends die one by one leaving you all alone to want your life to end. But i also feel even though Paul died he got what he wanted a happy ending to not go through life with these memories.
Chapter 9 and 10
Chapter 9: I felt was the worst part of war as Paul killed his first enemy face to face with. This part is the worse because he realized he wasn't just killing an enemy he killed someone just like himself someone. He realized he didn't just kill a man but he killed his family as they will mourn the death of their loved one. And he killed a man with a name. This allows Paul to think of how pointless war is and how they are just killing people because of their uniform difference which really is what war is like.
Chapter 10: Made me think of all the people with injuries but made me happy because they we're out of the war and even if they were dying they got to talk to one another and some even got to see family such as the oldest patient saw his wife. It made me think of a family that they were from the same blood from their war experience.

Imagine killing someone knowing they had a family they had friends just like you.
Chapter 10: Made me think of all the people with injuries but made me happy because they we're out of the war and even if they were dying they got to talk to one another and some even got to see family such as the oldest patient saw his wife. It made me think of a family that they were from the same blood from their war experience.
This War Is Ours by Escape the Fate
We have to find a better way
Out of this tragedy
As the battle rages on
Blood stains the ground we're on
My ears hear only screams
Brave soldiers are dyingOne Spartan stands alone and shouts
This war is ours.
This war is ours!
Yes, I will see you
Through the smoke and flames
On the frontlines of war
We have to find a better way
And I will stand my ground until the endTill we conquer them all
We have to find a better way
Through the fire and the flames
A sea of dead, drives men insane
We march the fight into the cold
This is as far as it will go
The battle ends on top of hereThis is where we conquer fear
On blackout armed with our swords
This war is ours.
Yeah.
This war is ours!
Through the smoke and flames
On the frontlines of war
We have to find a better wayAnd I will stand my ground until the end
Till we conquer them all
We have to find a better way
Till we conquer them all
Yes, I will lead you.
Through the smoke and flames
On the frontlines of war
And I will stand my ground until the end
Till we conquer them all.
We will conquer them all
We will conquer them all
We will conquer them all
This war is ours!
Yeah!
This war is ours!
Yes, I will see you
Through the smoke and flames
On the frontlines of war
And I will stand my ground until the end
Till we conquer them all
So I will fight my battle till I fall
And I conquer them all
Till we conquer them all
(WAR!) [7x]
Go. Yeah.
This is war.
War! [7x]This is war!
This is a song by escape the fate which reminds me of the book as it relates to war with the lyrics "so i will fight my battle till i fall" as many soldiers did until they died like Paul.. It also reminds me of Paul as part of the lyrics say "we need to find a better way" as i feel Paul wants as in chapter 8 he tries to make the man he killed feel better before he dies and tries to make his family feel better in pursuit of trying to make things better. He also gives food to the Russian soldiers which shows he wants to find a better way. The song also has this quote "we need to find a better way" in after til we conquer all which is what one of the characters talk about how the leaders fight instead which would be a better way to conquer them all.

Chapter 7 and 8
Chapter 7 was a reminder to the soldiers that they are still humans. Humans that they feel adventure and curiousity such as Paul going with his friends across the river to meet some french girls which symbolized adventure and curiosity as Paul still has a sense of seeing and doing new things for the thrill of it rather than not caring anymore. Chapter 7 also shows soldiers are still human because they love and what made this stand out more than anything was how he told his dad war stories when his dad was upset about his mother's cancer as Paul throughout the chapter said he hated talking about it but he did just for his dad that he loves.
Chapter 8 also went with this theme that soldiers are people too considering Paul giving some of his poatato pancakes to the Russian prisioners seeing them not as soldiers but as people starving just like his people. I feel these chapters were most important because it showed even though war happened still nothing could change as each soldier still has part of them somewhere either in curiosity (going to see the french women), love, (for family or friends), and compassion (towards a fellow human even if he is considered an enemy).
One thing i foreshadow is that Paul's mother will die considering we still cant save all cancer patients today and even a shot in the leg can kill you back then using Kemmerich as a refrence.

Chapter 5 and 6
Chapter 5 was an acknowledgement of the author's note in the story "even though they may have escaped shells they were destroyed by the war. As they squad talked about what they'd do after the war; Haie says he wants to stay in the army opposed to digging peats and Tjaden says he will just keep messing with Himmelstoss. The story eventually shifts to them realizing that they can't do anything after this because this war has truely destroyed their lives as Albert says "the war has ruined us for everything." (page 87).
(Picture is of Death in the Trenches which is what Paul saw often)
The story shifts greatly in chapter 6 as they are bombed and experience an even worse bombardment then they have yet. Many recruits die and the scene is full of imagery such as "another has the lower parts of his body and his legs torn off.", "Soldiers run with their two feet cut off, they stagger on their splintered stumps into the next shell-hole.", and "we see men without mouths, without jaws, without faces." (page 134) Also as we learned in history class that the trenches were dark, vile, and very unsanitary this chapter gave a view of what it was actually like to a soldier in the trenches and the true terror of being there.
In this section onomonopeia was used: Crack! (page 75)
Also, Paul refers to the trenches as "No Man's Land" which is what we read in our history book on what people during WW1 called the trenches
http://www.firstworldwar.com/diaries/trenchesatvimyridge.htm: Harold Saunders reminds me of the characters as he is put in the trench too and is only told the glamour of war before he is sent off.
Chapter 3-4
Chapter 3 was mainly about the charcter's more in depth personality such as, on page 37 where the character explained who Katczinsky was like as understanding of all trades and the smartest. The mood was more of careless or relaxed since the character's at the end of the chapter humilate Himmelstoss by covering him with a bed cover and messing with him (which my dad informed me it was called a blanket party) and they just kind of talk about themselves. One idea that stood out to me was Kropp's about the leader's fighting which would be very innovated, just, and would save lives.(page 41)
Chapter 4 has a shift from chapter 3 because they all are at the front lines now and they are attacked by their first bombardment. The mood of the story is bewildered as they are bombed and gased for their first real war experience. I feel the only reason Paul survived and any soilders lived was mostly luck as Paul wouldn't not have put on his gas mask if not for Katczinsky been near him to tell him.
I felt I really didn't know how poision gas effected people but I read: http://science.howstuffworks.com/poison-gas-info.htm, and learned that poision gas didn't just suffocate people they also could have had scars blisters and otther physical damages.

Chapter 1-2
(A Poster that Tempted Soldiers to go to War) - such as Kantorek Tempting Paul to go to War
Chapter one and two are an exposition of the story explaining the setting as "five miles behind the front" and the roles of each character such as;
Kantorek : "Kantorek gave us long lectures until everyone left." showing who he was on the inside as manipulative and "Kantorek had been our schoolmaster, a stern little man in a gray tail-coat, with a face like a shrew mouse", showed who he was on the outside. (page 10 and 11)
Muller : Wanting to have Kemmerich's boots and offers to exchange for them shows he's a realistist because Kemmerich would not have needed it since he lost his leg. (page 16)
Kropp : Standing up to Himmelstoss, a supieror by saying "Show you up." which shows he's not afraid to stand up to things. (page 25)
So chapter one and two also had flashbacks, and used figurative language such as;
Metaphor : "These teachers always carry their feelings in their waistcoat pockets." (page 11)
Simile : "His features have become uncertain and faint, like a photographicplate from which two pictures have been taken." (page 14-15)
